So, you’re not moving up the ladder? Your boss won’t promote you? Don’t worry, it’s not because you suck.
Here’s the inside scoop:
Getting promoted within the company can be tricky. It’s both easier and tougher. On the one hand, it’s easier because you know all the inside dirt and who’s who. On the other hand, it’s tougher because they know all the inside dirt on you, too. It can be a double-edged sword.
But here’s the real tea: sometimes, it’s not about skill or merit. Even if you’re the top dog in your department, there are some sneaky reasons why you might not be the best person for the job. We’re talking politics, implicit bias, nepotism, and all those other plain-old prejudices.
It’s not you, it’s them. Remember, you’re too valuable to lose. Give it time, keep crushing it, and they’ll come crawling back to beg for your genius eventually.
Meantime, it’s always wise to think, is this the job I like to do? If not, you can always try to land a job where your skills are more appreciated and seen. You can also go through career coaching to determine what job suits you best.
